I asked ChatGPT and Google who the top 10 writers on Medium were. I wondered if they’d come up with the same results.

I started by asking ChatGPT and this was its response:

As an AI language model with a knowledge cutoff in September 2021, I don’t have access to real-time data or the ability to browse the internet. Therefore, I cannot provide you with the current list of the top writers on Medium.com. The popularity and rankings of writers on Medium can change over time as readership and engagement vary. I recommend visiting the Medium website or conducting an online search to find up-to-date information on the top writers on Medium.

Fair enough. So I asked for the top 10 writers at the cutoff date of September 2021.

It gave me an almost identical reply.

I then told it that I didn’t need real-time data. It replied as follows:

I apologize if my previous responses were not satisfactory. Since I don’t have real-time data, I can provide you with a list of influential writers on Medium based on their past contributions and popularity up until September 2021. However, please note that this list may not reflect the current rankings on the platform. Here are some notable writers on Medium as of my knowledge cutoff:

Benjamin P. Hardy
Zat Rana
Ayodeji Awosika
Thomas Oppong
Darius Foroux
Tim Denning
Nicolas Cole
Jessica Wildfire
Shaunta Grimes
Jon Westenberg
Please keep in mind that this list is not exhaustive, and there are numerous talented and influential writers on Medium beyond those mentioned. To get the most up-to-date information on the top writers on Medium, I recommend visiting the Medium website or conducting an online search.

Note that it says that they are influential writers and not specifically the top 10.

I then asked Google who the top writers were. It shows a list of 15 writers “From sources across the web” as follows:

Admittedly, this isn’t very scientific. There’s no definition of ‘top writer’, so ChatGPT and Google are almost bound to come up with different answers. This is especially true given that ChatGPT is focused on September 2021 while Google has up-to-date information.

There are only 3 writers that made both lists – Jessica Wildfire, Darius Foroux, and Ayodeji Awosika.

I’ve read articles by all three of these writers, and I’m sure most readers would agree that they deserve a place at the top.

So, there you have it. This is just me playing around and experimenting, so don’t take it too seriously. I know how much this kind of analysis upsets certain people on here.
